Mabul – paradise but for how much longer?

It’s been a dream of mine to travel through Borneo, and I am finally ticking this off my bucket list. My first proper stop was the small island of Mabul, located in the Celebes sea. There’s no doubt the waters in these parts are stunning, but for how much longer?

Snorkeling on the Perhentian Islands

I’m the first to admit that I tend to be a little critical when it comes to what defines the perfect tropical island. I’ve been to some which have just disappointed me beyond measure, and I’ve come across others I thought would be impossible to beat. Here I am writing this from the Perhentians, and I just don’t think it’s possible to top this.

Kuala Lumpur!

Greetings from a bus, in the middle of nowhere, en route to Malacca. I’ve spent the past few days in KL (as the locals refer to it). It’s a pretty interesting city, and is similar but different to some of the other major Asian cities I’ve visited. I’m going to make this post a little more factual as it seems quite a few guys are planning holidays there soon.

Trekking to Inle Lake – a photo blog

The Shan Province of Myanmar is so incredibly beautiful. So beautiful that I have to think of other adjectives that don’t include the usage of the F word. I trekked from Kalaw to Inle Lake – a very scenic route through the countryside. This experience has solidified my belief that some of the nicest people in the world live in Myanmar – what a fantastic country!

Life’s a beach!

After leaving Bangkok, we made our way south to spend the next 2 weeks island hopping. I think it’s safe to say we are all 5 shades darker now and are responsible for the Nivea share price rocketing after all the sun block we consumed. Oh, we also learnt a valuable lesson:  don’t play with the local rum- it always wins.

The Tha Khaek loop

This has safely been one of my South East Asian highlights, and the crazy thing is I wasn’t going to do it. It meant deviating from my ‘only ride a scooter on an island’ rule, to riding one for 500kms around Central Laos. Spending 4 days riding through beautiful scenery – sign me up any day!

The 4000 Islands

The islands are one of those places you plan to spend 2 nights at, but end up doubling your trip and then some. The word ‘island’ may mislead you – we’re not talking about the crystal clear blue water ones… it’s the end of the rainy season in Laos and the Mekong is 7 meters higher than usual. The islands are, in essence, gigantic sand bars in the middle of the Mekong River.

Angkor in pictures

The temples of Angkor. Wow! The collection of temples made me wish I was born a few centuries ago to be amongst one of the few to have discovered them. They’re gobsmackingly beautiful. Most of them were being built around 900AD and are still standing. Quite a feat when you think that the average skyscraper in China only lasts 20 years!

The road from Sihanoukville to Battambang

I’m the guy that is always 10 minutes early for everything. I’m not the guy that misses a bus or a plane. I’m never late for a meeting and I try to know my plan, know the duration of a trip, and know when to get off a bus. This went pear-shaped enroute to Battambang, however.
